7 Rules for Sale Shopping

I am always scouring the sale racks at my favorite stores for good deals and more often than not I find something that made the trip worth it. I have always been a deal hunter. When I was a freshman in high school I went shopping at the local mall with my mom. We went into Deb and I wandered over to the shoe racks. Deb always had amazing sales and that was where I got most of my shoes (I'm pretty sure I never paid more than $10 for a pair). That particular day they were doing a promotion where you got an additional 25% off all clearance items. As I rummaged through the shelves looking to see if there was anything good, I found the white, thick-soled sneakers that my mom always wore. I looked at the price and took them over to her and asked her if she wanted them. She asked me how much they were. When I told her they were only 75 cents and she didn't believe me. I then proceeded to show her that the shoes had been marked down to only $1 and with the additional 25% off they were only 75 cents. That day we walked out of Deb with 2 pairs of sneakers for only $1.50.

Situations like this are the epitome of my shopping experience. I refuse to sacrifice quality or style just for a better price, but I learned how to shop the items I wanted with a budget I could afford. Sale shopping has become a lifestyle for me. It allows me to get the clothes and fashions I want without breaking the bank or racking up credit card debt. But it's not always easy. Here are some simple rules to follow if you're looking to score great deals.

1. Know the stores: You should know the stores you are hoping to score deals from. Have an idea of when they put things on sale. Are they a store that always has a stocked sale rack or do they only have special sales? Are there times when their clearance is marked down an additional percent or is it always the same? For example Old Navy knocks off an additional 30%-50% off their clearance items on a regular basis. Banana Republic also had 25% off their clearance last weekend. Department stores like Sears and JC Penny also do this too.

2. Have an Open Mind: You have to approach major sale shopping with an open mind. You will not always find what you're looking for at a price you're willing to pay. BUT you may also find an amazing deal on something that you know you will need in the future. I remember one year I was school clothes shopping and for the life of me I could not find a basic white button down shirt, but I did find a beautiful formal gown for prom on super clearance for only $3!!!

3. Don't Buy Things You Don't Want or Need: I know, it's hard. Sales can be alluring and when something is an awesome deal it's almost two hard to pass up. However, no matter how low the price, nothing is truly a good deal if you don't need or won't use the item. Before you buy something on sale ask yourself: Will I wear it? Will I use it? Does it work with other items in my closet?

4. Use Sales as an Opportunity to Try Out New Styles: Sale shopping can be a great way to try out new styles. If you are the type of person who is pants only, try scoring a couple skirts of the clearance rack for New York and Company (they tend to drop down to less than $8 when the season changes over, I've gotten them there for as little as $4.99). I know that I was very hesitant when the decorative scarf trend started. I didn't think it was for me, but I was at the mall one day and found a clearance bin of scarves for only $1.99, I got a couple in colors that would complement my closet to try out and ended up falling in love with pashminas and purse sashes.

5. Shop Off Season: If you have the money and the closet space to store some clothes until you're ready to wear them, try to shop off season. Get your summer clothes in the fall and your winter clothes in the spring. This is when you will find the best deals as stores try to clear out their old inventory for the new season's arrivals. This is an especially great time to score wardrobe staples: solid color camis, scarves, jeans, etc. Also, be on the lookout for sunglasses in the winter. I cannot tell you how many nice pairs I've scored for under $10 shopping them in the winter (even though you wear them all year).

6. Be Patient!: This is one that I cannot stress enough. If you can wait to buy an item, be patient. It will likely go on sale and you probably won't have to wait until the end of the season. Stores are always promoting their latest trends. Express, for example, tends to mark down their dresses about 30% midway through the season. Most store will have sales at some point, so if there is something you are really eyeing that is new on the racks, try to hold out for it to go on sale and be sure to check the stores website and circulars. Also, be sure to check the circulars for discount coupons. Macys periodically provides one day shopping passes where you can get a certain percent off your entire order.

7. Shop Online: In addition to shopping your favorite stores, be sure to check their websites. A lot of times you will be able to find items that were previously in the stores at very low prices and in many circumstances you can find free shipping. Be careful though, sometimes sale shopping online carries with it the final sale policy that most stores have in their brick and mortar equivalents making it somewhat risky to buy something you can't try on. However, for stores you are familiar with and know your size well, go for it! Be sure to check out websites like Rue La La too for low prices on many designer items.

Favorite Fashion & Beauty Daily Deal Sites

Sometimes you just don't want to brave mall crowds to scour the rack for good deals or maybe you just want to shop from the comfort of home in your PJs. Here's a round-up of my favorite daily deal sites where you can snag great fashion and beauty products:

Got2B Powder'ful First Impressions {+GIVEAWAY}

Thanks to BzzAgent, I was not only sent a bottle of the got2b POWDER'ful to review, but they also sent to additional bottles to give away!

I've used this a few time and here are some initial thoughts:

- The powder is very easy to use. You shake some onto your hands and then apply it your roots. Because you use your hands to apply it and work it in, you have a lot of control over exactly where the product ends up.
- This makes teasing your hair (excuse my Jersey girl moment) incredibly easy. You can easily achieve lots of volume and texture at your roots.
- The powder has an interesting texture, but not in a bad way...just took a little getting used to.
- The product, like all of the other ones in this line, smells good.
- Product washes out easily and doesn't leave build-up on your roots.

I'll post a tutorial of how I style my hair using got2b POWDER'ful, but for now I wanted to give you a sneak peek and launch the giveaway.

Choosing a Trench Coat That Will Take You From Spring to Fall

I love a trench coat! This versatile piece will take you from rainy spring to the cool parts summer to chilly fall, earning the stamp of a wardrobe staple in my closet. When picking out a trench, here's some things to look for:

  • Color: You'll want a neutral color that will work with most of your outfits. I love tan/camel and black, but shades of red, gray, brown, and cream can also work.
  • Length: Trench coats come in all sorts of different lengths from hitting somewhere around the hips all the way down to below the knees. Be sure to try on different options to see which cut is the most flattering on you. Keep in mind that you'll also likely be wearing this coat with flats, heels, and boots so you'll want to pick a universally flattering length. I like mine to hit mid-thigh.
  • Cut: You can find straight cuts, a-lines, and flared bottoms on trench, giving you lots of options. I  like a coat that is mostly straight, with just a hint of flare at the hem line.
  • Fabric Weight: Be sure to get an all weather coat with a light- or mid- weight fabric and avoid the heavy wools and knits that are reserved for winter coats.
  • Details: Look for durable hardware, interesting collars or cuffs, and placement of a belt that will let you cinch your waist!

Once you have an idea of what you like, be sure to shop around! There are trenches at every style and price point. You are bound to find something flattering and wallet friendly! Here's a few of my picks at different price points. What about you?

Heading to InterGem This Weekend!

I'm heading up to InteGem in Philly this weekend! The International Gem and Jewelry trade show is one of my favorite place to source supplies. They are open to the public (bonus if you're a hobbyist and just want great deals) and they also have a marked off area that's specifically for those shopping with a sales tax exemption.

You can find everything there from stones, beads, and findings to precious gems and fully finished pieces. And you can't beat the prices! I love browsing booth after booth of walls and tables filled with items I've never seen before. I love to be inspired by the materials.

Here is a peak at some of my favorite pieces crafted from my finds at InterGem last year.

Jeweled Pink Nails {+ Mini Reviews}

The new issue of Cosmo came in the mail today and as soon as I opened it I found an ad postcard inside with samples of Kiss Nail Dress strips in four patterns (it's between pages 178 & 179 for subscribers, not sure if this is in the store display copy).

Here's a pic of the four sample strips. Left to Right: Bustier (black with silver looking rhinestones in a flower pattern); Cocktail (hot pink stripes with silver colored rhinestones); Push-Up (white shimmery strip with a colorful peacock feather design); and Gown (silver glitter strip with multicolor rhinestones). There was also a full-page ad with instructions on how to wear and apply. I

I thought the Cocktail strip would make a great accent to go with the pink nail polish I got in my Birchbox this month. I have very tiny fingernails so I was able to cut one of the strip in half to make an accent for each hand.

I really love how this turned out. Here's my thoughts on the products:

Kiss Nail Dress: I really like the designs they offered and the quality of the strip itself. The strip was easy to handle and feels pretty durable. I had trouble trimming the overhang with a file and ended up having to use cuticle scissors to trim the edges. Overall, I would definitely try them again.

Ruby Wing Color Changing Nail Polish in Poppy: This brand is new to me. I received this in my April Birchbox. It is supposed to change color from hot pink to purple in the sun, but I haven't tested that out yet (I'll update when I do!). This polish goes on easily and dries super fast. It has a very matte finish. I used about three coats. I wore this for about a week when I first got it and it seemed to wear well, chipping was about average. I'll definitely be check out what other products Ruby Wing offers.

Have you tried Kiss Nail Dress or Ruby Wing? What were your thoughts?

Silver Mirrored Vanity Tray Tutorial

I really like to keep some of my current favorite pieces easily accessible on my vanity when I'm getting dressed. While wandering antiques malls, I've always admired the silver mirrored vanity trays, but I am clumsy and would probably break one before I could get it home (which I can only assume would be 7 years of bad beauty luck). So I decided to try making my own. This one cost less than $5.

For this project I used: a wood tray (I used a square 8x8 inch tray); a mirror that fits in your tray (also an 8x8 inch square--I found this one back in the floral department); acrylic metallic paint in a dark silver and light silver (I used FolkArt Metallic Paint in Silver Sterling and Gun Metal); paint brushes or a sponge brush; and glue (optional). I picked all of this up at A.C. Moore.
Start by painting the inside and outside of the tray sides with gun metal to create a base. This will make the silver paint show up better and create dimension in the finish of the final product. Don't worry about painting the bottom since the mirror will cover this area. I used one coat in the picture below.
After the gun metal coat dries, paint over it using silver paint. I used two coats to brighten up the piece. You can use as many or as few coats as you like to get your desired shade. Less paint will create a more pewter look, more coats will leave you with an antique silver look like mine.
Next remove any bumpers from the bottom of your mirror so you have a flat surface. Then use glue to to adhere the mirror to the bottom of the wood tray.
Once the glue dries, wipe off any finger prints and start curating your favorite things to display.
(Optional step: add stick on bumpers to the bottom of the tray to prevent it from scratching surfaces.)
Here's the final product. How easy was that? If you make one let me know, I'd love to see it!

The Avengers Black Widow Inspired Look

Black Widow Look
Tonight the hubby and I were watching The Avengers and I couldn't help but want to recreated the monochromatic, edgy look that Scarlett Johansson sports as Black Widow.

This look is pretty simple to recreate (minus the superhere-esque stretch fabric!). Start with a black jacket like a fitted leather jacket or motorcycle jacket. Pair this with a pair of skinny black jeans or pants, and accent with slouchy knee high black boots (bonus points for cool hardware) and a belt with a geometric belt buckle (I didn't go for red, here but you definitely could).

Modernize this outfit for everyday wear outside of your local biker bar by adding a bright colored cami under the jacket and a statement necklace.

Now, if only I could keep the temptation to dye my hair red at bay...

Procrastinating Beauty Blogger Tag

Image Credit: Matt Trostle via Flickr
I saw this tag over at Love Life and Makeup and couldn't resist.

1. Name a beauty regimen that you rarely do.

I'm not big on serums and face creams. I'm also terrible about remembering to apply sunscreen. I'm sure I'll pout when I have wrinkles and wish I had done more!

2. Is washing your makeup brushes something you do regularly?

Yes, I thoroughly clean them regularly or right away with makeup brush cleaner towelettes if I'm using a liquid or cream product or a really dark shadow color.

3. How long will you last with chipped nail polish?

This is a tough one. It really depends on what I'm doing. If I'm going in to work daily, then I will either touch it up or take it off regularly. If I'm doing housework or making jewelry, usually a few days.

4. How long do you put off buying/replacing a beauty or nail polish product even if you need it? (i.e purchasing a new topcoat, or a new foundation etc.)

I try to stretch the product as long as I can. I even purchased a beauty spoon knockoff to try to get more out of each container. Once I'm totally out, I'll put it off for as long as it takes me to find the one I want!

5. What is your worst beauty habit?

Biting my nails.

6. Name something non-beauty related that you put off doing all the time?

Sorting through all the mail and getting rid of all the junk. I tend to pull out what is important and needs my attention right away and then leave the rest of the sale papers for whenever I have some time.

7. When going out somewhere, do you leave getting ready until the last minute or not?

I pretty much have getting ready down to a science, so I usually budget that amount of time up to a few minutes before we have to leave.

8. Can you commit to spending bans?

When I need to, but usually I'm able to be frugal and get what I need without over spending. Coupons anyone?

9. How organized is your makeup and nail polish collection?

Very! I have a 9 cube shelving unit that I use to store all my products. In the cubes I have smaller containers like boxes from Ikea, small storage drawers from Walmart, and small bins from Office Depot that I use to keep everything organized on the shelves.

10. What is the longest amount of time you have gone without writing a blog post?

This blog is relatively new, so the longest has been a couple of days. On my frugal blog, up to a month or two when I was dealing with health issues.

I tag: Everyone!

Olay Fresh Effects Va-Va-Vivid Review

Last thing I received to review in my Influenster Voxbox was the the Olay Fresh Effects Va-Va-Vidid Powered Contour Cleansing System. This was great timing since I was in the market for one. I would definitely consider checking out this product next time you're at the drug store.

Pros: Triangular brush head makes it easy to clean in the corners of your face, contoured head slides easily over curves of forehead and cheeks, leaves skin feeling fresh and looking brighter, minimizes shine.

Cons: I thought the handle could have been designed a bit better and this product does not provide a deep clean that will erase blackheads.

I received this product gratis to review in my Influenster Voxbox. All opinions are my own, honest opinions about this product.

Skinny Girl Daily Bars Review

I basically love Bethenny Frankel. So when I found out that I was receiving a Skinny Girl Daily Bar to review in my Influenster Voxbox, I couldn't wait to try it. Despite the flavor being a little off for my taste, I still really liked the bars and will definitely be purchasing them again.

Pros: Good size, low calorie, natural ingredients, cute packaging.

Cons: Didn't love the peanut butter and coconut combination but the other flavors sound good, price is a little high at almost $2/bar.

I received this product gratis to review in my Influenster Voxbox. All opinions are my own, honest opinions about this product.

Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Spray Review

Thanks again to Influenster, I received the Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray to review. And I love it. I've always been a fan of rocking beachy waves, but it's hard when you have straight hair like mine that hates to hold a curl. And since I already have super thick hair, I'm always hesitant to use products because of the build up they cause. Thankfully that was not an issue here!

I used it on dry hair, spraying it throughout. Then I braided my hair while getting ready. When I let the braid out, I combed through my hair with my fingers and gave another spritz and was good to go.

Pros: Did not make hair oily, no yucky build up, easy to use, great price point

Cons: It can take a lot of product to achieve the look if you have long or thick hair like me.

Find out more about Not Your Mother's brand and the other products they offer on their website or Facebook page.

I received this product gratis to review in my Influenster Voxbox. All opinions are my own, honest opinions about this product.

Secret Clinical Strength Deodorant Review

Thanks to Influenster, I received the Secret Clinical Strength Stress Protection Deodorant in my Sweetheart Voxbox! With it being tax time there are lots of long stressful days, so I'll take all the stress protection I can get.

Pros: Goes on smooth and clear, lasts all day without having to reapply, and keeps you dry and odor free.

Cons: The scent was very strong! It was a nice scent, but it interfered with my perfume. It could easily take the place of body splash.

All in all, I would highly recommend this product if you're in the market for a new deodorant. Be sure to check out all of the scents. If you want to find out more about Secret, check out their website or find them on Facebook.

Pinspired: Candy Topiaries

A while back I repinned a picture of a lollipop tree, but it didn't have a source! After doing some searching today, I found out it was from Jill Dubien's blog Meet the Dubiens. You can see her original lollipop tree post here.

With all of the holiday candy floating around, I decided to experiment with this idea myself using different forms and candies. I ended up with two, one similar to the original inspiration and another creation of my own.

These would make great party centerpieces or gifts. You could even check out your local arty store of candy shop to make these in a favorite color. Each one cost less than $10 and they were super easy to make. Each one took about 15 minutes.

Have fun experimenting with different styrofoam shapes, types of candy, and containers. So many possibilities!

1. A styrofoam ball (I used a 6 in. ball from AC Moore)
2. A container to serve as the stand (This was a metal flower pot from Dollar Tree)
3. Lots of lollipops! (I used Dum Dums from Walmart, but you could use an kind of round lollipop like Tootsie Roll Pops or Blow Pops)

To assemble:
1. Put the styrofoam ball on top of the the container you've selected. You can glue it down if you're worried about it falling off, but mine stayed on fine without using any. Also, if you don't glue it down and you're thinking about making this for a gift, you could put a small gift in the container and use the topiary as packaging!
2. Next start inserting the lollipops. I found that starting around the bottom was much easier than starting at the top. I inserted the lollipop sticks straight in.
3. Keep inserting the lollipops, staggering them in each round to be sure you fill in all the spaces. Do this until you're topiary is covered!

Here's the finished project. You could also paint the pot, tie a bow around it with some ribbon, or paint a terra cotta pot with chalkboard paint to write a message to the recipient.

For the second one, I used: 1. A taller, vase-like container (again from Dollar Tree); 2. A concial styrofoam form (from AC Moore); 3. Rolos; 4. Toothpicks.

I made this one the same way as the lollipop topiary by using the toothpicks to secure the Rolos. The only difference for this one was that I covered the form first, then turned the container upside down to make it a stand and glued the two pieces together.

As you get closer to the top, you make have to cut the toothpicks in half so they don't poke out the other side. You can see in my picture that I tried starting out at the top. That did not work out so well. It's much easier to start at the bottom so there is support for the candies as you move up the piece.

I was really happy with how these turned out and I can't wait to give some of these out as gifts. Have you tried making something similar? I'd love to hear about it!
